But that doesn’t mean they don’t have serious problems. Recent studies have actually shown that dentures can contain incredibly dangerous bacteria, especially to older patients who may have compromised immune systems! We don’t want you to fall prey to these conditions keep reading to find out what could happen and what you should do to prevent it!

Denture Diseases: What’s The Cause?

You’ve probably heard of plaque. It’s that sticky white film that builds up on your teeth and dentures during the day. It’s a problem for everyone whether they have natural teeth or not! You may have noticed that your dentures feel sort of gross at the end of the day and that’s why!

Just like your natural teeth there are some dangerous bacteria on your dentures! But dentures also have an additional problem that isn’t a problem for natural teeth: they spend a lot of time out of your mouth exposed to airborne illnesses! There’s any number of way you can pick up harmful bacteria on teeth that don’t stay in your mouth all the time!

When you breath through your mouth you run the risk of inhaling these dangerous bacteria right off your dentures and into your lungs!

What Are The Risks?

Studies of the bacteria content of dentures have turned up two particularly alarming bacteria strains: pneumonia and the bacteria that causes MRSA, a hard to treat staph infection of the lungs! These conditions can be very threatening to older adults and the bacteria was found on over 60 percent of the dentures studies! That means there’s a better chance than not that one of those bacteria strains is in your mouth right now!

Preventing Denture Diseases

Stopping denture diseases before they start requires excellent oral hygiene! Here’s how to keep your dentures extra clean:

  • Rinse your dentures each time you eat. Take that time to rinse your mouth out as well.
  • When brushing your dentures in the evening make sure you use a special denture toothbrush and denture toothpaste. They’re both designed to clean the special materials that your dentures are made of.
  • Brush your mouth as well, but not with your denture equipment!
  • Make sure to soak your dentures overnight in a denture soaking solution. The solutions are preferred over water because they give your dentures a bit more of a cleanliness boost!
  • Rinse your dentures before you put them in your mouth in the morning.Never sleep in your dentures!
